DC’s Budget is Short-changing those most in need, Our Majority!

Where is the Money?

1) Corporate welfare, tax giveaways for economic development, such as the publicly financed baseball stadium, which is driving out our working class residents into the suburbs. We aren’t even collecting the rent due from the owners of the Nationals! (Nickles' recent deal gives the Lerners more money than we get back).
2) In the under-taxed income of our wealthy residents especially DC millionaires (about $5 billion income per year in 2006) who are now paying a lower DC tax rate (5%) than the rest of us (8%, with the so-called middle class paying 10%).
3) Paying rent to private real estate owners for municipal functions while own public property could be used for the same purposes. $110 million per year.
4) $50 million stolen under the nose of Gandhi our CFO and another $50 million used to renovate MCI Center so our corporate elite will have better seats.
5) More $ millions in hidden accounts in our budget, with non-transparent “special funds” totaling $500 million.

Where isn’t the money?

In our under-funded budget that should serve our youth, seniors, homeless, all in need, especially in this time of economic crisis. The Fair Budget Coalition recommended a modest improvement in this budget requiring about $300 million in additional funding. Very little of this was funded. We will only get a fair budget if we demand and organize for fair DC taxes!
